Miyoshi Hondori Shopping StreetAfter Nagaharu Asano, the founder of the Miyoshi-han (feudal clan) used the river as a natural moat, Miyoshi-machi was maintained as a sokuruwa-type castle town where feudal lords, vassals, and townspeople could all live together. The streets are lined with granite stones, and you can see old buildings with traditional "Udatsu" roofing which indicates that the merchant houses were extremely prosperous. On the shopping street, you can see the Jusaburo Tsujimura Doll Museum that exhibits works made by the world-famous doll maker Jusaburo Tsujimura.
Okuda Genso Sayume Art MuseumGenso Okuda is a famous Nihonga painter who was born in 1912 in Futami-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture (what is now Kisa-cho in Miyoshi City). One of his most famous artworks "Taigetsu" was awarded a special prize from the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten). This work depicts a scene of the moon rising above the forest along the Basen River. This is exactly the same scene that you can enjoy from the museum's lobby. With the red bridge and symbolic red leaves of the tree that are reminiscent of the "Genso red" style, this place perfectly showcases the particular style of the Miyoshi area. Inside this museum, you can also see works by his doll-maker wife Sayume.
